Your Personal Brand in The Online World

In the past few years, the world has known an explosion of social networks as a way of communicating through the internet. Social media is the use of the internet tools to communicate with people, businesses, media agencies…Etc. In this article, I am going to discuss social networks that are used by companies. Businesses use social media tools for marketing, broadcast news, promote their brand or provide customer services. They are also used by business to keep in touch with their fans and advertise for their products or services. Social networks are used also by recruiters to advertise for their jobs and search for job seekers whose CVs match with their needs.

The way you represent yourself on social media tools determines the way people perceive you. McDonald’s, for example, has a clearly defined brand. McDonald's has managed to create a chain of restaurants and to become an international institution. It has a logo, a mission and a vision statement. ‘McDonald’s image’ has been established though setting scientific criteria to guide the development and success of the company. The branding of McDonald’s is integral to its marketing and its interaction with the customers. So, companies like McDonald’s need to monitor comments so as to keep informed about their customers opinion, know their needs and address any potential issues that may have detrimental effects on the business. So, Social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+ and others allow you to find out about any business or brand and also know what other people say about the business.

But what this has to do with you?

You also need a personal brand as the founder of Amazon once said: “Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room”. So, your personal brand is the way by which you present yourself on the net which may have either a positive or a negative impact on other people. You should not care about how you look only at interviews, but also on social media. These elements are parts of your brand. Your brand should be able to attract people to communicate with you on a professional or personal level.  If you are looking for work, you should for instance know how to represent yourself on social networks so as to be able to find the write employers.

So if you think it is time to have a personal brand… your personal brand should include:

  • Identity and values;
  • Your Personality;
  • Your skills and competencies;
  • Goals and objectives;
  • How you look;
  • What you do;
  • What kind of people you are looking for.

So you should start for now thinking about your personal brand. But at the same time there are other factors that you have to take into account, they include your personal security and how your employer wants you to act on social media.
