What to Look For in an Online College

It was not too long ago that the only way a person could get a college degree was to attend a ground campus. Getting a degree was out of the question for a single parent or for adults who had to have a full time job. Time has changed for the better. Now people can attend college from the comfort of their own home while caring for children, and working full time. Many different colleges offer degrees online. However it is important to know what to look for when finding an online school to attend.

The first thing to look for is a college that offers the degree you are interested in online. Some colleges offer online degrees but not in all fields.

Make sure the college offers licensure if the field of study you are interested in requires a license. Some colleges offer a degree in the field but not all of the degrees lead to licensure. Education is one field where many colleges offer an online degree but it does not lead to licensure. If it doesn’t then keep searching or you will attend four years of college, get the degree but not be able to enter the field of education until you have a teaching license.

Make sure the college is accredited in the state you reside. It is best if it is accredited in all states.

Check the school’s rating. Some websites have ratings. If not you can Google the college to find out what other people think of it. Ask around for reviews. I wish I had done that when I attended college for my Bachelors degree. The college you attend must be reputable.

Cost is important too, be sure to compare college tuition. When comparing though check on credit requirements. Make sure to get a total cost for the degree from beginning to end.  Ask about other charges, some schools charge a large amount when your first begin. Some charge monthly for labs and books. Others have miscellaneous charges that you don’t know about until you’ve enrolled.

Make sure the college has a phone help line. Don’t attend a college if you have trouble contacting them when enrolling. If you have trouble then you will always have problems.

It is wonderful that people can now attend college online. It opens the door to people who cannot attend at the campus.  It is important though to make sure the college you plan to attend will be the right fit for you.
