Tips To Do Well at Exams

Studying hard for an exam is not really enough to do well for other parameters come into play a little bit before or during the day of the exam. The following are some practical tips to help you prepare in advance for “your fated day”.

Sleep well: after you have gone through your notes and finished from reviewing your lessons, it is necessary to give your body and your brain a break in order not to be over-exhausted. So sleeping early gets you psychologically and physiologically ready for the exam, and if you’re not a morning person remember to set your alarm clock to be able to get up early and thus avoid being late. Lack of sleep generates lack of concentration which is not healthy for making your day at the exam.

Eat well: getting up early an hour or so before the time of the exam is so helpful to enjoy a balanced diet without feeling the need to rush while eating. If this ever happens, you risk having problems in digestion and therefore it is not a good thing while taking the exam. To aid your brain function properly, your meal should be rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C. Anxiety and fear may cause you to have low-blood pressure however. For this reason, it is a good idea to have some sugar with you just in case.

Be early at school: as the saying goes “early birds eat the worms”. Being as early as possible at school, half an hour or at least fifteen minutes, helps you to connect and adapt to the tense atmosphere of the exam. For instance, having a look at the school, at the schedule, at your exam number to locate your seat in the classroom or the like are all ways to make you completely focused. This also lessons stress and lowers anxiety, and most importantly, creates for you the necessary mode to handle appropriately the questions as well as the answers of the exam.

Get rid of basic biological needs: this tip sounds a bit weird but it isn’t actually if you give it some thought. It is better to go to the bathroom before joining the classroom. Otherwise, instead of being fully focused on the latter, your brain will be busy thinking of going to the first. That is, if your brain doesn’t concentrate on the questions, it will shift to question the disturbance caused by your body. Therefore, it is important to be physiologically undisturbed so that you would eventually be alert in providing the right answers.

Start with the easy questions: during the exam, you don’t have to start with the very first questions but have a scanning glance at the exam sheet to detect  which easy and which difficult. Then deal with the easy questions because these activate your brain to work out correct answers swiftly. Plunging into the hard questions is too risky in that they block your brain, and make you lose focus when treating the subsequent questions. Remember that time flies; when you are completely engaged in the exam, you may not pay attention to time.  In this case, putting a watch in front of you as a reminder is essential to make a good management of the allotted time.

In conclusion, taking an exam is not the end of the world, it is a tool to measure how well you have learnt certain teaching points, and what is required to make you overcome the difficulties in the areas you are still stumbling. There is no failure, there’s only feedback!
