Study Tips for Single Parents Attending College Online

Being a single parent and going to college online can be very taxing and present a lot of study problems. It takes a lot of effort to be efficient in college while taking care of your family.  Finding a place to study, time to study, devoting time strictly to studies, reading only what is necessary are some study tips for a successful college experience for the single parent.

It is important to have a place to study. This place must be quiet and free of clutter.  Most people cannot focus if they are trying to study in a noisy place. Find something for the kids to do also so that they are quiet and do not interrupt you while you study. It is hard to be organized if you are studying in a place that is cluttered. A great place to study is the kitchen table It is usually free of clutter and the kitchen or dining room is a quiet place to relax and get down to the business of studying.

Try to study the same time each day.  Online college is very flexible and sometimes it is hard to discipline yourself to study. It is also very hard to devote time for studying when your kids needs have to be met.  It is best if the kids can go to a friends for a few hours. If not though, have them study the same time as you. If they are not old enough to study, have them play a game or watch a movie. Do this at the same time each day if possible. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to study the exact time each day at least try to pick a specific time the day before and stick to that time.

Don’t try to multi-task. Devote yourself to studying and completing your work during your school time.  Single parents have many responsibilities. They have to fix dinner, clean house, take care of the kids and help the kids with their school work.  Don’t try to do anything other than your own school work during school time. Think of it like this: If you were at a ground campus you couldn’t clean house, cook dinner, or take care of the kids. Treat online study time the same and devote your time strictly to school. School work takes a lot of concentration and it is important to focus on school and only school during the time you have allotted for study time.

Many classes in the online environment are accelerated. This means that each week you have a lot of reading to do. Most people do not have time to complete all of the reading, especially single parents who already have too many responsibilities. Trying to read every article or chapter can result in a lot of stress and burn out which will in turn result in inadequate assignment completion. The best way to manage reading in the online environment is to read as you complete each assignment. Then after the assignments are done, read what you can to learn what is needed to succeed in learning what you need to know to be a success in the class.

Going to college online and being a single parent is not as easy as people think. Online college requires a lot of devotion, parenting requires even more. Learning how to study, when to study and where to study will help you succeed in college while being a single parent.
